Creativity

The most profound moment of creativity for me this semester occurred during the process of our Dramatic Remix project. We were instructed to revise a current television show to have existential components like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. In this assignment I revised the 90’s tv hit and one of my childhood and current favorite shows, Friends. At the beginning of the writing process, I struggled with making the play sound more existential, an less like the happy go luck comedy it was known as. I established the voice of Friends, but not the voice of Stoppard or existentialism. After working with Annie and Erica on their screenplays, I felt more confident about how to craft my work in a way that emulated the mysterious and confusing nature of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. I used Stoppard play as a model for my own, asking questions constantly and answering those questions with more questions.

This project helped me to establish my own thoughts into a piece of writing while also putting the thought that an author would have into the existential part of the texts. Incorporating existential components into the dialogue took a lot of revision time because I had to make sure the conversation flowed smoothly and stayed somewhat true to the original show, while also adding another layer of deeper meaning. Since the show Friends does not usually contain existential material, it took a lot of effort to put the characters in a situation in which they discuss existential topics. The project took a lot more effort than an analytical paper and I liked that because the result seemed more profound to my learning. Dialogue
